How ‘Hidden’ Body Fats Protect us From Deadly Brain Disease?
There are various types of fat stored in our body. We consume various types of fat from different foods we consume in our daily life. The fat we consume can be categorized into saturated fat, Trans fat, and unsaturated fat.
When the unsaturated fat is divided, we can categorize unsaturated fat into monounsaturated fat and polyunsaturated fat. The polyunsaturated fat can be further divided into omega-3 fatty acids and omega-6 fatty acids.
Extra fat is often considered as a poison by many experts, and many of them argue a lot about maintaining the level of fat. However, the recent findings have found some interesting facts about the impact of extra fat on the brain health.
Many researches are taking place conducted by many researchers for finding the ways to protect our brain from brain diseases. In the verse of finding the ways to protect our brain from brain disease, there was a study conducted at the University of California, Berkley. They conducted the study in the nematode worm.
How Some Types of Fat Protect Us from Brain Disease?
The study done at the University of California found one interesting fact. The finding in nematode worms shows that having a little bit of extra fat can actually reduce the risk of neurodegenerative disease like Alzheimer, Huntington’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and others.
All these diseases have one common cause. It is caused because of abnormal protein stored around brain cells, causing plaques. These plaques lead to damages causing mental decline along with early death.
When we look at the cause of Huntington’s disease, it is caused due to aggregation of protein inside brain neurons. This aggregation of protein then leads to motor dysfunction, depression, and dementia.
These types of protein aggregation are linked to repair system disorders, which the nerve cells depend upon to fix misfolded proteins. One misfolded protein then leads other proteins to fold incorrectly. This continues and creates a chain reaction to form clumps, which the cells are unable to deal.
When the researchers at the University of California perturbed the mitochondria, in nematode C elegans, which mimicked Huntington’s disease, the worms were growing fat. After that, they observed the impact of increased specific lipid production, and it surprisingly leaded to prevention of aggregate protein formation.
The fat found by them was needed to turn on genes, which were responsible for the protection of animals and cells from Huntington’s disease. It revealed the new method, which might be harnessed for treating the disease. It was also same in case of human beings.
The researchers treated the human cells and worms with Huntington’s disease by using drugs that were responsible for prevention of the cell from sweeping and storing the lipid. In this observation, they found the exact same protective effect.
What Types of Fat Protect Us from Brain Disease?
The research clearly showed how specific types of lipid can actually protect us from brain disease. Lipid can be defined as the fat-like substances, which are crucial parts of the membranes.
These membranes are located between and within each human cell along with myelin sheath. It coats our nerves and protects it. Lipids include fatty acids, oils, waxes, and cholesterol. Not all fat protects our brain, but there are some types of fat, which can protect us from brain disease.
The increasing number of researches has now shown that choosing the right type of fat can actually protect our brain, while too much saturated fat can increase the risk of brain disease. It can be a smart choice to switch from butter and red meat to fish, olive oil, and nuts because of the difference in the composition of types of fat.
Red meat and butter contains saturated fat, whereas fish contains omega-3 fatty acids, especially salmon, and olive oil contains monounsaturated fat. Nuts are an excellent source of both polyunsaturated, and monounsaturated fat along with omega-3s.
The study shows that omega-3 can prevent us from various health problems, and it includes brain disease as well. It also shows that omega-3 fatty acids are deeply concentrated in the brain, and it is vital for the smooth brain function. The brain can be in a better state if you consume unsaturated fat, and it will drastically reduce the possibility of brain disease.
It is necessary to take care of your health, and your health means both physical and mental health. With statistics showing high prevalence of brain disease, it becomes more important to take good care of your brain. Because of the high prevalence of brain disease, many researchers have taken place in the recent times on how to protect from the brain disease.
The increasing numbers of researches are indicating that brain disease can be protected with smart choice of fat. This means there are some types of fat capable of protecting from brain disease, and you should adjust your diet for better brain Health.
